Survey: IT Recruiting Still Going Strong Despite Layoffs
A recent poll developed by RHI Consulting reveals that the recent spate of layoffs in the high-tech and dotcom industries have not greatly impacted IT recruitment. The survey of chief information officers (CIOs) revealed that eighty-four percent of executives feel these cutbacks have had no impact on their recruiting efforts. Only eight percent of respondents indicated it is now easier to locate IT candidates.
The national poll includes responses from more than 1,400 CIOs from a stratified random sample of U.S. companies with 100 or more employees. It was conducted by an independent research.
"Notwithstanding recent announcements regarding job cuts, the need for skilled IT talent remains," says Katherine Spencer Lee, Executive Director of RHI Consulting. "Unemployment is at a 30-year low, suggesting that available IT professionals are being quickly reabsorbed into the workplace."
Lee notes that many businesses are rehiring former staff members -- particularly those with in-demand skill sets, such as Web development, network security and technical support.
"One effect of layoffs in the dotcom sector is an atmosphere of caution among candidates," Lee says. "Job seekers are now weighing factors, such as the company's stability and long-term career opportunities more heavily when deciding to accept an offer of employment."
