U.S. Customs to Modernize Systems with IBM
The U.S. Customs agency has picked IBM to lead a $1.3 billion project to streamline the organization's commercial processing systems.
IBM Global Services will act as "prime contractor." Other companies in the project will be Lockheed Martin Mission Systems, KPMG Consulting, Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC), Sandler & Travis Trade Advisory Services (STTAS), Booz-Allen & Hamilton, ITS Services and more than 40 small businesses.
The project's name -- e-Customs Partnership -- conveys a vision of the agency's aim to be a paperless organization that uses electronic means to carry out its responsibilities.
Lockheed Martin Mission Systems will develop and integrate new systems and software. KPMG Consulting will contribute business transformation, knowledge management, and training expertise. CSC brings expertise in information security and telecommunications. STTAS will provide global trade and customs expertise. Booz-Allen & Hamilton, ITS Services and the 40 small businesses will contribute specialized knowledge of Customs operations and expertise in particular areas.
With the challenges of explosive growth in international trade and travel, plus increasing law enforcement demands, the agency aims to reengineer its operational processes.
