IBM Goes Big in Europe
The Max Plank Society for the Advancement of the Sciences (Munich, Germany) has contracted IBM to build a supercomputer, that is expected to be the fastest non-classified supercomputer in Europe when completed in 2002. The computer will be designed to achieve a peak performance of 3.8 trillion calculations per second. It will be used to research fields, such as polymer research, solid state physics and theortical chemistry, fusion research, astrophysics and biochemistry. Scientists plan to use the supercomputer to better understand diseases, such as Alzheimer's.
The supercomputer will be built with IBM's Power4 system.
