Compaq Expands Linux, Open Source Initiative
Compaq Computer Corporation announced it has expanded its Linux and open source initiatives. The push includes: high-performance Beowulf clustering, a program for interoperability and portability between Linux and Unix, investment and participation in a Linux lab, training and certifying system engineers, contributing SSI clustering technology to the open source, and fostering development of Linux applications for handheld devices.
Compaq is partnering with several Linux players to deliver Beowulf clustering solutions on its ProLiant server platform. The partner companies are: San Diego Supercomputer Center, Scientific Computing Associates, Scyld Computing Corporation and Turbogenomics. Compaq is also strengthening its alliance with Oracle Corporation to advance development of Linux solutions. As part of this alliance, Compaq with participate in the Oracle Linux Lab.
Compaq new Linux and Tru64 Affinity Program is intended to allow customers to combine Linux and Unix environments. The program will offer a portfolio of software tools and services that helps create a mixed environment of Linux on Compaq ProLiant or AlphaServer systems and Tru64 Unix with common user interfaces, applications and management capabilities.
On the open source front, Compaq has made its Single System Image (SSI) Clustering Technology available on Linux and is working with the open source community to make SSI clusters ready for production. The first components being released are a kernel-to-kernel communication subsystem and a kernel resident membership service. Also, the company is adding an Accredited Systems Engineer (ASE) certification level for Linux to the Compaq Accredited Professionals Program (CAPP) and aligning its certification requirements with partners Red Hat and SAIR with plans underway to include Linux Professional Institute (LPI).
Compaq also announced a Linux application development contest for handheld devices. Winners will be announced during Linux World in August.
