OpenVZ Project Releases Update for Latest Linux Kernel

Latest version includes PID namespace code, expected to be adopted with upcoming kernel release

The OpenVZ Project's software for OS server virtualization is now available for the latest Linux kernel (2.6.22), which was released in July.

This latest release features new process ID (PID) namespace code to replace what was included in earlier OpenVZ versions. According to OpenVZ, a future release of the Linux kernel is expected to adopt this new PID namespace code, which OpenVZ submitted with comments from IBM and others.

According to an OpenVZ press release, "PID namespace ensures that a set of processes does not see any other processes that do not belong to the same set and is an essential prerequisite for live migration."

The latest OpenVZ release also offers support for user ID namespaces "which is already included in the Linux kernel," the company said.

In a statement Kir Kolyshkin, manager of the OpenVZ Project, said, "In this kernel, we already support new Linux 2.6.22 features like the tickless kernel that results in cooler-running processors and increased power savings, along with the SLUB allocator which is the core of kernel memory management and promises better performance and scalability."
