Embarcadero Releases InterBase SMP 2009

High-performance database designed for embedded, enterprise applications

Embarcadero Technologies has released InterBase SMP 2009. The update to its fast SQL database is part of the company’s CodeGear product line and provides additional “data security, portability, performance, and uptime to VARs, ISVs, OEMs, and enterprise businesses,” the company said in a release.

New security features include “bolstered column- and database-level encryption, Over The Wire (OTW) encryption, and support for the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), which provides comprehensive data security,” the company said. The update bulds in support for symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) to increase speed. The company is now offering a ToGo Edition which features a footprint of under 3MB to “give ISVs and OEMs the flexibility to ship an embedded and highly reliable SQL-compliant transactional database.”

The InterBase database delivers its high performance in a small footprint and is designed to run with minimal administration. Embarcadero says InterBase is popular among developers who need to build packaged software that depend on including a database for redistribution.

"With InterBase SMP 2009, we are introducing high-end RDBMS features such as SMP scalability, high availability, AES encryption and OTW security for both embedded and server applications at a highly affordable price point," said Michael Swindell, Embarcadero Technologies’ vice president of products, in a company statement. "In addition, InterBase can now also be paired with PowerSQL, our powerful new SQL IDE designed to speed SQL development while reducing errors, as well as with ER/Studio, which provides a complete data modeling environment for analyzing, designing, creating, and maintaining database architecture.”

The product also features:

  • High performance and scalability comes from native support for SMP, developers can exploit multi-core architectures that let them scale applications across CPUs.

  • Maintenance is reduced thanks to simple installation as well as automatic crash recovery. InterBase also features a self-maintaining engine that is self-tuning.

  • Increased availability with log-based journaling that aids in short-term recovery. Long-term recovery uses its journal archives, which is useful when system hardware fails.
