Neptuny, an IT performance optimization, capacity, and virtualization planning solution vendor, has released Caplan 3.3. The update improves how users can manage virtualized environments and support virtualization initiatives. The release also includes new out-of-the-box connectors.
Caplan 3.3 provides two major features for supporting real-life virtualization planning:
- The ability to simulate future placements (of both physical and virtual candidates) based on historical trends of resource consumptions and workloads
- The ability to take storage space constraints based on defined DataStores to identify the optimal allocation scenarios and to simulate configuration changes to DataStores
The update also extends management of VMware ESX environments, including Resource-Pool- and DataStore-related metrics, support for vApps, and support for tracking events such as DRS migrations.
Caplan 3.3 provides additional benchmark management capabilities, such as the ability to upload and use custom benchmarks in the same way as the standard benchmarks (e.g., SPEC or TCP-C) already included in the product.
Tagging has also been improved; users can manually tag entities, domains, analyses, models, and reports and can define configurable tagging rules (e.g., those based on configuration metrics or regular expressions) to automatically tag entities, domains, analyses, models, and reports.
New filter options allow users to define actionable groups of entities (aka entity filters) for both systems and workloads also based on results of dynamically executed search queries. Users can leverage entity filters definitions, for example, to define the scope of analyses. Version 3.3 provides the ability to search by tag or by analyses, models, reports, and domains in addition to systems and workloads. Advanced filtering (e.g., by server:name) and conditional expressions are also now included.
Caplan 3.3 includes also several new and updated out-of-the-box connectors, including IBM Tivoli Monitoring (ITM) -- which has been updated to ITM v6 and expanded to support additional Unix and Windows metrics -- and VMWare vCenter, which has been updated to version 2.5 of vCenter API.
Caplan is also available as Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), offering capacity management to small and midsize enterprises that cannot afford costs associated to on-site implementations, or even to larger (enterprise-level) companies that need to quickly setup capacity planning for a critical project.
