Dell EMC Extends High Performance Computing Wares to Mainstream Enterprises

Dell EMC said it was "democratizing" high performance computing (HPC) by extending its HPC wares to more mainstream enterprises.

As part of that initiative, it today announced a bevy of HPC cloud offerings, software, systems and customer success stories at the SC16 supercomputing conference in Salt Lake City.

In the software space are new cloud bursting offerings and services from Cycle Computing, providing cloud orchestration and management of leading cloud services platforms such as Azure, AWS and Google. Dell EMC also will this quarter offer the Intel HPC Orchestrator, based on the OpenHPC open source project, to ease the installation, management and maintenance of HPC systems.

Also in the systems space, the company said Dell EMC Isilon, DSSD, ScaleIO and Elastic Cloud Storage (ECS) were added to its expanded HPC portfolio to provide more storage and cloud capabilities to enterprise HPC customers.

The company also announced solutions powered by NVIDIA Tesla GPUs along with Pascal architecture designed to further capabilities in deep learning, data analytics and HPC.

Targeting hyperscale datacenters are new Dell EMC PowerEdge C4130 and R730 servers that now sport NVIDIA Tesla P100 accelerators for helping organizations to boost throughput and save money. These, the company said, will advance intensive deep learning applications and leverage artificial intelligence techniques to drive science advances.

Continuing the advancing-science theme, the company announced the Dell EMC HPC System for Life Sciences will early next year be available with the PowerEdge C6320p Server with the Intel Xeon Phi processor. "This accelerates results for bioinformatics centers to identify treatments in clinically relevant timeframes while protecting confidential data," the company said in a statement.

For a customer success story, Dell EMC said: "MIT Lincoln Laboratory Supercomputing Center (LLSC) has selected Dell EMC to install a 648-node HPC system through the Dell EMC and Intel early access program for the Intel Xeon Phi processor. LLSC’s new 'TX-Green' system, one of the largest of its kind on the U.S. East Coast, exceeds one petaflop and has provided the center with a 4X computing capacity boost."

The company also said the University of Pisa is using its Dell EMC PowerEdge C4130 servers, with the aforementioned NVIDIA Tesla P100 accelerators -- and NVIDIA Deep Learning GPU Training System (DIGITS) -- for deep learning of DNA sequencing.

"The global HPC market forecast exceeds $30 billion in 2016 for all product and services spending, including servers, software, storage, cloud, and other categories, with continued growth expected at 5.2 percent CAGR through 2020," said Addison Snell, CEO of Intersect360 Research, in the Dell EMC news release. "Bolstered by its combination with EMC, Dell will hold the number-one position in total HPC revenue share heading into 2017."
