Quest Software Boosts Database Performance, User Productivity with Quest Central® for Oracle 5.0

New release of Quest Central for Oracle provides performance management and support for Oracle RAC and Oracle E-Business applications

SAN FRANCISCO, December 8, 2004 – At Oracle OpenWorld, Quest Software Inc., a leading provider of application, database, and Windows management solutions, today announced version 5.0 of Quest Central® for Oracle, an integrated set of performance management tools for database administrators (DBAs). This new release offers enhanced Performance Analysis and support for Oracle RAC and Oracle E-Business applications, while embracing Quest’s strategic approach for high performance.

Effective data collection and analysis is essential for identifying and correcting performance issues. Quest Central for Oracle 5.0 includes enhanced Performance Analysis for Oracle, which collects and stores a comprehensive history of the SQL workload and database activity to provide database administrators (DBAs) with the ability to analyze, diagnose and report on problems. This greatly enhances DBA productivity by allowing them to rapidly identify bottlenecks, anomalies and application trends – learning what happened in the past in order to predict performance in the future by looking for conditions that might result in a performance issue.

In addition, both the Performance Analysis and Space Management components of Quest Central now support RAC environments. Performance Analysis supports RAC drill downs while Space Management has been extended to minimize space usage and improve performance in RAC environments. As a result, RAC-based applications perform better and their maintenance costs are reduced significantly, freeing DBAs to focus on extending or adding more business-aligned functionality.

“When supporting a complex environment or for very large databases, independent vendor tools often improve operational efficiency and availability, defer costly hardware upgrades and lower cost of support,” notes Noel Yuhanna, senior industry analyst, Forrester Research, Inc. In his January 2004 report, Criteria For Selection: Database Performance Measurement Tools, he adds: “When supporting packaged applications, consider a database tool that integrates with the application.”

Version 5.0 of Quest Central for Oracle also includes targeted support for Oracle E-Business Applications with integrated performance diagnostics with Quest Spotlight® on Oracle E-Business and application tuning. By diagnosing and resolving performance issues and providing automated analysis reports, Quest Central for Oracle significantly reduces maintenance costs and the time spent diagnosing E-Business application issues is minimized.

“Performance management of Oracle databases requires real-time and historic diagnostics as well as predictive capabilities. The new features within Quest Central for Oracle allow database administrators to diagnose and resolve performance issues even in more complex RAC and Oracle E-Business environments,” said Larry Humphries, vice president of product management, Application and Database Management Solutions, Quest Software.

Quest Central for Oracle supports Oracle versions 7.3.4 through 10g. It also supports an extensive list of operating platforms including Linux, Unix, Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003.
