OSDL is Open for Business
The Open Source Development Lab (OSDL) is officially open for building and testing enterprise class Linux projects. The 11,000-square-foot computing center, located west of Portland represents the industry’s first independent, non-profit lab for developers adding enterprise capabilities to Linux and Linux-based software.
The Lab, which is supported by 19 sponsors and more than $24 million in funding, will first help tackle a scalability project for enhancing Linux to support sixteen 64-bit processors, with near-linear performance improvement.
Computer Associates, Fujitsu and Hitachi today joined original lab sponsors HP, Intel, IBM and NEC in supporting the lab. Miracle Linux, Mitsubishi and Covalent joined original members Caldera, Dell, Linuxcare, LynuxWorks, Red Hat, SGI, SuSE, TurboLinux and VA Linux as additional contributors and sponsors. An independent board and officers manage the lab, and its full-time staff is under the supervision of Lab Director Tim Witham.
Under the lab’s charter, all projects are established according to the open source development model. The lab does not create projects; rather, it supports and accelerates existing or new projects developed by the open source community.
The lab houses several servers that interface with Internet communications links, providing lab access to developers around the world in order to create a single virtual lab. The companies plan to provide significant hardware updates over the next six months.
