Sony Adds Java to Its PS2 Broadband Plan

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) will integrate Sun's Java platform into the PlayStation2 (PS2) computer entertainment system. The system is expected to be available by the end of 2001.

Sony expects the addition of Java to further its plans to make PS2 an all-in-one entertainment and communication system. With Java, users will be able to download new applications and services from the network in a secured manner.

According to Sony, the availability of Java on PlayStation 2 also enables the easy connection and communication with other Java-enabled clients, such as wireless handsets, PDAs, interactive televisions and other network devices. It will become possible to enjoy various Java based applications including simple games, such as those available on mobile phones, on a cross platform basis.
