SoftLanding, PowerTech Combine on AS/400 Security Tool

Jim Martin

With security looming larger as a big issue in the computer industry, SoftLanding Systems (Peterborough, N.H.), an AS/400-based change management and access administration technology company, has signed an agreement with security expert PowerTech Group (Tukwila, Wash.).

Through the agreement, SoftLanding will now market, sell, and support PowerTech Group’s AS/400 network security tool, PowerLock. According to SoftLanding, increased demand for PC-to-AS/400 network security solutions led to this partnership.

“As AS/400 data becomes more accessible, security must be stepped up. For example, our SoftMenu product does an excellent job of controlling green screen access to the AS/400. But our customers also need to control access via PC functions to keep their system secure. We began searching for a solid, robust, yet reasonably priced solution to offer. PowerTech meets all these criteria and provides the kind of value our customers have come to expect from our software. It’s the perfect fit for us.”

PowerLock audits how users access an AS/400 through their PCs via functions such as Remote Command, ODBC, FTP and TCP/IP. It also allows administrators to control which users have access, along with the functions and objects they have authority to use.

“AS/400 security becomes much more complex and difficult to control as companies allow freer information flow between PCs and their AS/400s,” says John Earl, executive VP of PowerTech Group. “PowerTech Group has built an affordable solution for finding and fixing potential network security gaps in a market where ‘affordable’ has not been part of the vocabulary. Now, with SoftLanding’s help, we’ll make this solution available to a large number of AS/400 shops.”
