Perle Systems Router Merges SNA, IP Applications

COMMON 2000, SAN DIEGO—Perle Systems has another addition to its networking family with the introduction of SmartServer 400e, a full function router with optional integrated Twinax Terminal Server support for remote AS/400 networking environments.

Slated for general availability sometime in Q2/2000, the new router gives AS/400 users a solution that allows SNA applications and hardware to be maintained, while new IP-based e-business solutions are implemented.

According to Sean O’Donovan, VP of worldwide marketing at Perle, SmartServer 400e targets users who are contemplating a switch from their existing controller to router based functions but still need to retain Twinax connections at remote sites.

SmartServer 400e is able to meet these needs by giving AS/400 users flexibility in the development of their remote networking environment, allowing them to implement e-business solutions without abandoning mission critical applications and hardware.

“There is no other high-end router on the market today that can offer AS/400 users the option to seamlessly maintain Twinax support in their IP routed network,” says O’Donovan. “The SmartServer 400e provides an efficient and cost-effective solution for AS/400 user that want to connect a mix of Ethernet LAN connections, dial-up PCs, locally attached Twinax terminals and printers, PCs and voice connections over a wide area network.”

The SmartServer 400e can connect over one or two high-speed digital leased lines, with analog or ISDN connections available for primary and back-up WAN connections. It maximizes bandwidth to increase WAN performance by taking advantage of high-speed leased line digital services and data compression, as well as ISDN bandwidth-on-demand.

Some of the other advantages include: modular and scaleable design for growing user populations; multi-service networking to handle all types of data interface; integrated network security to ensure secure access; comprehensive network management and diagnostics to simplify ongoing operation and maximizing uptime; eight async ports; optional 594M Twinax cards; reduces management overhead and maintenance costs.

To ease the concerns of prospective customers contemplating this switch, SmartServer 400e has a free one year warranty that includes free 24x7 hotline support, free software maintenance and free express replacement service. “We provide the extra comfort package that our customers are looking for,” says O’Donovan.

SmartServer 400e also has a Voice over IP ready platform for future deployment of voice/communication across an IP network. “It won’t do Voice over IP yet, but it does have that capability,” adds O‘Donovan.
