Data Domain Introduces Virtual Tape Library Option
Capacity-optimized storage technology now available in Fiber Channel SAN environments
Palo Alto, Calif. -- January 23, 2006 -- Data Domain, a leading provider of capacity-optimized storage (COS) solutions, today introduced a new Virtual Tape Library (VTL) option for its DD400 Enterprise Series Restorers. Customers with Fibre Channel SANs can now take full advantage of the massive compression enabled by Data Domain -- 20-50x -- while backing up data to disk through a virtual tape interface. The VTL option is available for any product in the DD400 Enterprise Series of Data Domain Restorers. The DD VTL offers emulation of up to 47 active virtual LTO drives across up to 100,000 virtual cartridges, and it supports 1GB or 2GB Fibre Channel links. Customers can use both the VTL interface and Data Domain’s existing NAS-style Ethernet-based file service interfaces simultaneously; Data Domain is the only disk backup vendor to offer this capability. DD VTL also offers full support for the Data Domain Replicator, so compressed virtual tape images can be automatically copied across the WAN to a disaster recovery site, using minimal bandwidth.
“The current crop of VTLs is designed to vault immediately to physical tape. Storage economics and network bandwidth constraints have prevented VTLs from becoming anything more than a fast cache to a physical tape library,” said Frank Slootman, president and CEO, Data Domain. “Data Domain’s Capacity Optimization technology changes all that: deep retention on disk and network vaulting are now economically and operationally viable.” The DD400 Enterprise Series from Data Domain allows users to store several months of backup data onsite, with up to 200 TB of storage capacity in a 3U rack-mount appliance, and offers fast backups and restores, with throughput of several hundred gigabytes per hour. Recoverability of data is continuously verified and re-verified to ensure that restores can be performed quickly. All products in the DD400 series can be used with the Data Domain Replicator software module for disaster recovery.
The DD VTL has been successfully tested with VERITAS NetBackup™ and Backup Exec™ and EMC Legato® Networker, IBM, Oracle®, HP and CommVault®. The DD VTL option is available immediately for any product in the DD400 Enterprise Series through the extensive network of Data Domain reseller partners. Pricing starts at $4,000 for a DD410 VTL.
