IBM Donates Software Tools

IBM Corp. saidtoday it would donate $40 million in software to the public domain as anextension of its open source strategy. The Eclipse project, launched with thedonation, will create a framework to allow applications to run consistently,regardless of platform.

Eclipse is aframework – a set of functions and APIs – that IBM has donated to thecommunity. Developers can use the framework for developing applications thatwill run on both Linux and Windows. Since the framework is open source,developers are free to add and modify the framework.
