IBM Announces $1 Billion WebSphere Initiative
IBM last week announced sweeping advancements and another $1 billion investment in its core Internet middleware technology. The investment includes hiring, product development and marketing campaigns to help companies use middleware to prosper from e-business. And, at the centerpiece of the effort is WebSphere.
"The WebSphere software platform is the first true e-business platform, an integrated set of technologies, that addresses every phase of e-business. Customers don't have to search out the pieces or worry about how they'll all fit," says John Swainson, general manager, Application and Integration Middleware, IBM Software. "No other company -- not Oracle, Sun, BEA or Microsoft -- has delivered on this promise. And we've got more than 10,000 customers to prove it."
Building on the WebSphere Foundation, IBM also announced WebSphere Application Server 3.5, Standard, Advanced and Enterprise Editions. WebSphere Application Server deploys, integrates and manages Java-based applications and JavaBeans components for the enterprise. It offers a set of application services for transaction management, security, clustering, performance and availability.
WebSphere also provides Foundation Extensions, which are integrated services and tools that companies can use to grow and adapt business processes and develop complete e-business solutions in response to a dynamic marketplace. Foundation Extensions provide rapid application development, improve the presentation of information and applications, and help meet performance and manageability needs through advanced deployment services.
