Packeteer Develops ASP Initiative

Packeteer Inc. has entered technology and service integration agreements with Citrix Systems Inc., Compaq Computer Corporation, InfoVista and Portal Software Inc. as part of its ASP (application service provider) Initiative. Packeteer's ASP Initiative is focused on providing networked applications infrastructure for ASPs and consists of the AppVantage system and the technology and service integration partnership agreements needed to offer complete customer solutions.

AppVantage is a policy-based application subscriber management system that enables ASPs to ensure the performance of the applications that they are hosting. As a result of Packeteer's technology integration with Citrix, ASPs can use AppVantage to set-up separate policy classes to monitor and control published applications on Citrix servers. Packeteer's partnership agreement with InfoVista builds on the AppVantage platform and InfoVista's management and reporting engine, to provide tailored reports for ASPs.

Compaq has signed with Packeteer to provide distribution and systems integration services to ASPs and will sell professional services based on the AppVantage platform. In addition, Compaq will resell and/or integrate jointly created turnkey QoS-based solutions for application hosting environments.

Through a technology integration partnership with Portal, Packeteer has integrated AppVantage with Portal's Infranet software, a customer management and billing solution designed for the needs of the Internet and emerging next-generation communications service providers.

Under the terms of the technology and service integration agreements, Packeteer is working with these companies to build new services enabled by the AppVantage application subscriber management system. Leading ASP application vendors such as Great Plains, Onyx Software and SalesLogix are working with Packeteer to ensure that their applications are automatically recognized within a hosted environment that is enabled by the AppVantage system. ASPs such as FutureLink and ESOFT Global are currently evaluating AppVantage and plan to start trials in the fourth quarter of 1999.

AppVantage automatically discovers and classifies over 150 different enterprise, messaging, collaboration, and net-based telephony applications -- including Oracle, Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft NetMeeting, VoIP, Baan, and many others. Once classified, QoS and bandwidth-allocation policies protect and control each distinct application service for each customer.
