Perle Begins Shipping VPN-Supported Controllers

Perle Systems (Westmont, Ill.) has begun shipping a new series of network controllers, featuring support for VPN. With the 594 series, Perle becomes the first vendor to offer VPN support tailored to remote AS/400 users running on existing SNA infrastructures.
“Perle has fulfilled its stated commitment to deliver VPN functionality to the AS/400,” says Sean O’Donovan, vice president of worldwide marketing for Perle. “Our customers are increasingly looking to VPN as a means to dramatically cut enterprise networking costs, while delivering the security technology to confidently deploy e-business applications via the Internet of IP-based private networks.”
The series includes Perle’s 594e and 594T product lines and is fully compatible with IBM’s 5494 controller. It allows customers to run SNA across an IP network. An integrated routing feature in the product also enables support for IP devices at remote sites, in addition to an existing Twinax and SNA infrastructure. According to Perle, a VPN infrastructure can result in up to 50 percent savings on networking costs, compared with Frame Relay or leased lines.
The VPN package is available for both the Perle 594e and 594T and includes VPN functionality along with full IP support. The Enhanced Network Package, available only for the 594e, also includes NC Proxy Boot Server capability. The products are priced at $1,200 for the standard VPN Package and $1,800 for the Enhanced Networking Package.
