Hummingbird Adds Support for Solaris to Web-to-Host Offering

Hummingbird Ltd. today released the 1.1 version of its Web-to-host solution e-Gateway. The offering now supports Web access to legacy applications residing on Sun Solaris 2.6 and 2.7 in addition to Windows 2000 and NT environments.

Hummingbird e-Gateway is designed to be a low-administration, quick and cost-effective route for remote or workers to access host systemsthrough the Web. It enables the display of any mainframe or AS/400applications that have been rejuvenated using Hummingbird e-Toolkit, aset of development tools for software and Web developers.

"With e-Gateway 1.1, we continue to extend server support in the HostPublishing World by now making the product accessible to enterprise users based on Sun Solaris platforms as well as Windows 2000 and NT users," said Xavier Chaillot, product manager Hummingbird e-Gateway in a statement.

Hummingbird touts e-Gateway as the quickest, easiest and most efficient way to provide lightweight terminal emulation and access to applications over the Web.

A server-side product, e-Gateway enables the user to connect to legacy enterprise systems through a browser. It is centrally administered and user authentication is managed through the Hummingbird CAP Server which can be linked to any enterprise identity directory and acts as an authentication gateway.

Once a session to the host is initiated, the browser displays a Dynamic HTML page with the host screen. With DHTML and patent-pending Remote Page Control (RPC), e-Gateway's server repaints specific areas of the browser screen and allows for dynamic refresh of the data -- saving bandwidth and providing a true Terminal Emulation experience.

e-Gateway version 1.1 leverages traditional emulation features such as keyboard mapping, color mapping or macro-recording from any browser by providing enhancements to these features.

In addition to support for Solaris 2.6 and Solaris 2.7, e-Gateway 1.1 enables load balancing across multiple platforms and multiple Hummingbird e-Gateway servers. SSL Connections between e-Gateway and the Host in TN3270, TN5250 and VT environments are also now available through e-Gateway.
