Iona Enhances Corba Connectivity and Management with New Orbix V6.1

Native Microsoft® .NET Access to CORBA applications, Single Sign-On Security, and IONA Management Architecture Extend Value of CORBA Across the Enterprise

Dublin, Ireland & Waltham, Mass. - December 15, 2003 -- IONA (NASDAQ: IONA), a world leader in high performance integration solutions for mission critical IT environments, today announced Orbix v6.1. Orbix v6.1 delivers enterprise organizations new features, including native Microsoft .NET access to CORBA systems, Single Sign-on security, and a new Management Architecture for improved enterprise collaboration, IT resource management, and system availability.

Orbix v6.1 is the only product to bring CORBA enterprise qualities of service - including management, security and transactions - to Microsoft .NET clients. It allows Microsoft .NET developers to use the familiar interfaces to build, integrate, and deploy CORBA-inclusive applications, and does not require new hardware resources. Orbix v6.1’s new Management Architecture allows customers to exploit existing investments in Enterprise Management Systems such as IBM’s Tivoli® , making it possible for an organization’s CORBA infrastructure to be controlled and monitored from an administrator’s familiar management console.

Orbix v6.1 is the newest member of IONA’s family of CORBA-based high-performance integration products, which also includes the recently released Orbix Connect and the latest edition of Orbix Mainframe.

  • Orbix Connect removes the cost and complexity of integrating J2EE and CORBA, by enabling Java developers to leverage CORBA investments without requiring vendor-specific CORBA knowledge, and by simplifying the connectivity process overall.

  • Orbix Mainframe v6.0 makes it easy to integrate host-based COBOL, PL/I, CICS, and IMS systems with applications running on UNIX or Windows platforms, enabling the reuse of mainframe business logic and data

“Orbix v6.1 is more evidence of our dedication to advancing CORBA technology, and to serving the thousands of enterprise organizations that depend on IONA to keep their past, present, and future mission-critical systems working together,” said Scott Devens, Vice President of Products, IONA.

Devens continued, “We are committed to honoring organizations that have made CORBA an element of their mission critical IT environments, and we will continue to enhance Orbix in ways that extend that investment. At the same time, we are looking to the future, and leveraging our leadership in service-oriented integration to deliver new products, such as Artix. Our goal, as always, is to help our customers bridge today’s heterogeneous enterprise software systems using Web Services and other standards-based technologies to enable incremental, non-disruptive application renovation and consolidation.”

In addition, Orbix v6.1 adds smart card support, bi-directional GIOP, improved connection scalability using Java NIO, and performance data logging. Orbix v6.1 is backed by IONA’s new 5-year support offering to provide customers confidence as they prepare for long-term deployments.

Orbix v6.1 will become generally available on December 19, 2003. To find out more, please contact IONA at [email protected], or visit http://www.iona.com/products.
