MaXXan Adds Virtual Tape Systems to Family of Intelligent Fabric Storage Solutions

SAN JOSE, Calif., March 1, 2004 - MaXXan Systems, Inc., the first company to ship intelligent storage networking solutions, today announced new virtual tape systems that increase the speed and reliability of existing third-party backup applications by using disks to emulate industry-standard tape libraries. MaXXan’s new SVT100 and SVT200 virtual tape systems leverage the company’s innovative intelligent fabric architecture to deploy a disk-to-disk-to-tape solution that minimizes the cost of enterprise storage by utilizing existing backup servers and software.

“MaXXan is offering a solution that is squarely at the intersection of two trends: movement of intelligence to the fabric and disk-to-disk backup and restore,” said Arun Taneja, founder and consulting analyst of the Taneja Group. “There is no question in my mind that these trends are not passing fantasies or fads, but represent true value for the customer.”

“The cornerstone of MaXXan’s intelligent fabric architecture is a SAN platform designed to deliver the lowest TCO and highest ROI for enterprise storage applications,” said Ravi Chalaka, MaXXan’s vice president of marketing. “Our new virtual tape systems deliver on this promise by eliminating per-server software licenses, maintaining existing management of backup processes through utilization of the current hardware and software assets, and enabling the use of any disk array as a virtual tape library for superior backup performance and reliability.”

The SVT100 and SVT200 are built on MaXXan’s Storage Application Network Engine (SANe) architecture that centralizes the delivery and management of storage applications from the storage network by leveraging high-performance I/O engines and an intelligent switching fabric. The SVT200 application card integrates into MaXXan’s MXV320™ Intelligent Application Switch for data center implementation. The MXV320 combines a director-class, scalable switch with multiple storage applications, such as virtual tape, within the same platform. The SVT100 is a standalone system for mid-range environments or remote sites that do not need a switch or for integration with other existing SAN switches. Both the SVT100 and SVT200 are powered by FalconStor’s IPStor Virtual Tape Library software and integrate into the MaXXan Operating System (MOS) software with a high-performance I/O engine for cost-effective and easy deployment.

MaXXan’s virtual tape systems utilize Fibre Channel protocols to back up data and, more importantly, restore data from a disk-based virtual tape at ultra-high speeds while maximizing reliability by eliminating robotic mechanical failures and physical tape media errors. Customers can add optional software services to provide active/active clustering support and data replication software for high availability and disaster recovery solutions and to maximize ROI.

The SVT100 and SVT200 can be easily added to any SAN-based enterprise backup environment without requiring organizations to scrap their investment in backup software, servers and tape libraries. The virtual tape appliances support leading backup software applications including CA Brightstor, Legato Networker, HP Data Protector, Veritas BackupExec and NetBackup, Syncsort Backup Express and Tivoli Storage Manager, and can be configured to emulate LTO, SDLT and StorageTek 9840 tape drives, as well as libraries from ADIC, HP, IBM and StorageTek.

MaXXan’s virtual tape solutions integrate seamlessly with an organization’s Information Lifecycle Management (ILM ) policies as the systems are deployed transparently into an existing backup environment. Export and import of data between the systems’ disk-based virtual tapes and physical tape media is accomplished as a secondary task, allowing the disk-to-tape migration to be completed at any time of the day without impacting application performance.

Pricing and Availability

The MaXXan SVT100 and SVT200 virtual tape systems are currently available through MaXXan authorized resellers in the United States, Canada, Europe, Taiwan, China and South Korea. The MSRP starts at US $39,000 for the SVT100 and US $34,000 for the SVT200.
