Symantec Client Migration 3.0 Eases Enterprise Migration Tasks

Offers organizations secure and effective PC data and desktop settings migration

CUPERTINO, Calif. – June 7, 2004 – Symantec Corp. (NASDAQ: SYMC), the global leader in information security, announced Symantec Client Migration 3.0, an easy-to-use solution designed to reduce the costs and user downtime associated with PC migration. Symantec Client Migration 3.0 provides organizations with a cost-effective solution that streamlines the migration process by automating many of the repetitive tasks associated with PC migration. Symantec Client Migration 3.0 is scheduled to be available in early June.

Symantec Client Migration 3.0 will offer a fully automated, script-based migration service called Symantec AutoMigrate. In addition, the product features a Web-based interface for users to perform their own migration and application update tasks. Users will be able to access a single, browser-based interface that provides them with a familiar and user-friendly migration process without the need to install another client. Organizations are provided with a cost-effective, easy-to-use migration solution that can be controlled from the user’s desktop.

“With today’s complex enterprise networks, operating system provisioning tools alone are often not sufficient in dealing with the complexity of a mixed hardware and software environment,” said Thom Bailey, director of product management, enterprise administration, Symantec Corporation. “Symantec Client Migration provides organizations a powerful migration solution for PC data and desktop settings migration as part of an overall plan for operating system deployment, application provisioning and continued lifecycle management.”

Symantec Client Migration 3.0 offers organizations a secure software migration solution that employs a centralized administration plan. The product features Windows domain authentication support to securely associate user authentication within a domain. All files can be managed using encrypted data transmission for maximum transport security. In addition, Symantec Client Migration provides four levels of access rights for added data security.

Symantec Client Migration 3.0 includes several components and features designed to accelerate the migration process and reduce administrative costs by automating repetitive tasks:

  • Symantec Migration Server – The Symantec Migration Server is the core of the Symantec Client Migration application. It runs on a dedicated computer and handles all the migration resources, client logins and data storage. The Symantec Migration Server stores all migration policies and controls both the self-service and the Symantec AutoMigrate processes.

  • Symantec Migration Control Center – A central management console that allows IT administrators to set up and organize migration projects. Administrators can easily create migration policies, selecting what can be included in and excluded from the user package and conduct tasks such as initializing the Symantec AutoMigrate function.

  • Symantec Migration Client – The Symantec Migration Client can be run in one of two ways to create a package of a user’s application settings, system settings and data from a source computer, save it on the Symantec Migration Server and restore the package to a destination computer: (1) Interactively by the end-user or (2) using a script developed by the IT administrator in connection with the Symantec AutoMigrate feature. The Symantec Migration Client includes a Web-based interface and an ActiveX control that are automatically downloaded to the client computer when the user logs in to the Symantec Migration Server.

  • Symantec AutoMigrate – A utility that lets IT administrators automate the migration process and create, restore and delete packages on the client computer. Symantec AutoMigrate is executed with no interface and no input from the user. It can be run from the command line or in a scripting environment.

  • Package – A collection of user data, operating and application settings from a source computer, created using the Symantec Migration Client. A package can be stored on the Symantec Migration Server or in the Client Staging Area if used with Symantec Ghost 8.0. Symantec Client Migration integrates with Symantec Ghost 8.0 to utilize the Client Staging Area, which provides a local store on the user’s machine minimizing network storage and bandwidth requirements.

  • Symantec AutoInstall – An application packager that allows the IT administrator to create self-executable files of applications, patches and hot-fixes for deployment within the network.
