NetEx Unleashes Hyper Powered IP Storage Application Accelerator

Simpler, faster, more cost-effective alternative to TCP/IP and other transport platforms speeds storage application performance to OC12

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn., November 2, 2004 -- NetEx today announced a new storage application throughput standard that eliminates the need for expensive and complex networking equipment while solving TCP/FCIP/iSCSI/iFCP/FTP throughput issues often associated with business-class WAN connections.

NetEx¹s Hyper Powered IP provides the simplest and highest performing WAN platform for accelerating the broadest range of storage applications in the industry. These include EMC SRDF Adaptive Copy and SRDF/A, VERITAS Volume Replicator/NetBackup, NetApp SnapMirror and SnapVault, IBM TSM and associated applications such as Oracle DB RSync, Microsoft Exchange and many others. Hyper Powered IP leverages common IP networks while enabling high-speed connections up to OC12 -- as much as a 1,000 percent increase in throughput for many applications.

The new standard either works with or replaces existing high-speed storage transport products using the company¹s unique IP acceleration technology, a simple appliance-based configuration that easily attaches to an existing network infrastructure and requires no changes to servers/storage controllers, applications and/or network devices. Hyper Powered IP is transparent and non-disruptive to operations and ensures non-stop data availability.

"Hyper Powered IP represents an order of magnitude improvement over antiquated ESCON-over-IP, slower FCIP solutions and inefficient TCP/IP," said Robert MacIntyre, Vice President Business Development and Marketing at NetEx. "Because specialized and dedicated equipment is not needed in the Hyper Powered IP configuration, there is less hardware to purchase and maintain, eliminating not only additional infrastructure investment but also greatly reducing the cost of dedicated network management."

Native TCP is often inadequate and inefficient for today¹s storage needs. TCP delivers poor bandwidth utilization for most storage applications because of packet loss. This problem gets significantly worse as distance increases, resulting in much lower WAN throughput performance. By adopting Hyper Powered IP, users are able to maximize performance while minimizing costs associated with traditional TCP/IP WAN configurations, and with only one storage application fabric to manage, a Hyper Powered IP network results in simpler implementation, operation and management.

"Packet loss is an inescapable issue wherever glass meets metal," said Marc Staimer, Founder of Dragon Slayer Consulting. "The result of this loss is greatly reduced efficiency which no amount of compression will solve. Hyper Powered IP¹s solution, which includes packet loss mitigation, allows storage applications to function over the WAN at an incredible pace, setting the bar for performance standards."

NetEx¹s Hyper Powered IP is able to accelerate data rates and minimize degradation over distance by using superior compression along with latency and packet loss mitigation technologies. The NetEx solution automatically compresses data, ranging from 2:1 to 15:1, depending on the information being compressed, and quickly and efficiently aggregates the data blocks to the HyperIP-accelerated pipe. NetEx provides high value at short-circuit distances by "shielding" the data from intermittent network variations thereby mitigating, if not eliminating, the occasional restart of critical data transfers or missed critical data transfer windows.

NetEx's HyperIP replaces the myriad Fibre Channel appliances within a WAN and easily connects to any vendor¹s 10/100/1000 Ethernet switch. It is totally transparent to application, TCP and network infrastructure, appearing as a gateway to servers or storage controllers. Hyper Powered IP¹s unique application aggregation capability enables a number of replication applications to run concurrently over a fully redundant, highly efficient common IP infrastructure.

In addition to storage networking applications, HyperIP ensures that challenging data transfers are consistently completed on time between mainframes and distributed servers for data warehousing and data mining, medical and digital video images, fixed content and high-performance technical computing. Hyper Powered IP also brings the same benefits to extended iSCSI targets, providing better performance over distance, improved link utilizations and a shield against packet loss.

Pricing and Availability

Hyper Powered IP is available immediately with MSRP starting at approximately $20,000 U.S. Hyper Powered IP scales according to throughput requirements; the customer only pays for the throughput they require.
