Tandberg Data Unveils Network Backup Appliance for SMBs
Installs in 30 minutes, the easy-to-use InteliStor(TM) integrates NAS, tape, and Symantec backup software
POWAY, Calif.-- Sept. 8, 2005 -- Tandberg Data Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of Tandberg Data ASA, has introduced InteliStor(TM), a seamlessly integrated, easy-to-use network backup appliance that integrates Tandberg Data's Microsoft(R) Windows(R) Storage Server 2003-based InteliNAS(TM) device, StorageLoader(TM) LTO2 (or 420LTO(TM)) and Symantec Backup Exec(TM) software. InteliStor joins InteliNAS as the second in a family of SMB-targeted network backup products from Tandberg Data that enables SMBs to select the right backup solution for their particular needs. A third backup product will debut in the near future.
InteliStor combines advanced data protection for backup, archiving, recovery, and restore with a set-up process that's so easy to install, configure, and deploy, companies can have it up and running -- out of the box -- in 30 minutes. As a key part of any disaster-recovery scheme, InteliStor's D2D2T starter package is an ideal solution for any growing small- to medium-size business (SMB) facing the challenge of developing a data storage retention and disaster recovery solution with limited IT support and budget.
With Backup Exec, InteliStor transforms the NAS appliance into an affordable, intelligent, proactive turnkey data protection appliance that is easy to use, manage, and scale. By offloading the storage function from servers, it improves server I/O performance and efficiency. By offering three disk capacities in 1U form factors -- 1.6TB, 1.0TB and 480GB -- it meets today's demanding high-capacity, low-profile requirements. Additional benefits include:
Quick deployment. Because Tandberg Data has already pre-configured the three main elements, companies can install, configure and run InteliStor in 30 minutes with complete confidence the data will be protected.
Simplified administration. InteliStor features easy-to-use Web browser-based management.
Greater cost efficiency. There are minimum client licenses, administration efforts and service support.
Simplified service. Tandberg Data provides a single point of technical support for the entire solution.
"Symantec Backup Exec software, the gold standard in Windows data protection, delivers comprehensive, cost-effective, and certified data protection and recovery to address the growing and agile needs of small- and medium-size businesses," said Glenn Groshans, director, product marketing, data management group, Symantec Corp. "The integration of Symantec Backup Exec into InteliStor provides customers with easy access to the leading Windows backup and recovery software solution that delivers tremendous value to Tandberg Data's customers right out of the box, simplifying administration and improving information availability."
"All companies, regardless of IT budgets, need to ensure they have adequate resources and tools in place to store and recover their data as quickly as possible," stated Brian Babineau, an analyst with Enterprise Strategy Group. "ESG research estimates that 50 percent of small- to mid-size businesses are planning to implement disk-based backup solutions within the next 12 months. Tandberg Data is in the vanguard of those companies focusing on data protection solutions that are affordable, easy to deploy and, most importantly, enable customers to recover data quickly."
InteliStor features Tandberg Data's 1U InteliNAS Network Attached Storage which is based on Windows Storage Server 2003, a fully functional backup appliance that simplifies storage management and improves network reliability, performance and efficiency for increased overall productivity. Windows Storage Server 2003 provides a seamless integration for most users.
Tandberg Data's 1U StorageLoader LTO2, used in the 1 TB and 1.6 TB InteliStor, delivers maximum density (up to 3.2TB of compressed capacity) and fast transfer rates (up to 48MB/sec) to maximize backup window efficiency. The unique cartridge load design features two removable magazines (four data cartridges each) for efficient bulk-loading and off-site storage. The unit's modular design makes it easy to service and provide field-replace internal components.
Tandberg Data's 420LTO tape drive, used in the 480 GB InteliStor, provides up to 400GB of compressed capacity in a compact 1U form factor. The 420LTO features the lowest power consumption (18W) of any LTO tape drive. Its unique airflow design minimizes heat dissipation throughout the drive for increased MTBF and low TCO. Tandberg's SmartGripper(TM) technology securely locks the media leader pin to help ensure positive tape loading.
InteliStor also combines Windows Storage Server 2003 with Symantec Backup Exec to deliver an easy-to-use, high-function primary disk system with integrated D2D2T management. A simple, powerful Web-based browser interface configures the system. Everything from user management to data protection schemes are controlled through the management console to reduce backup and restore windows and improve administration efficiency.
Pricing and Availability
Pricing ranges from $5,999 to $12,500, depending upon capacity. Complete solution pricing is $10,999 (MSRP) for 1TB of disk and 3.2TB (compressed) of unattended tape backup including software.
