Ontrack Data Recovery Introduces PowerControls Version 4.1

New software version offers unique content analysis function for multiple data stores

MINNEAPOLIS -- May 16, 2006 -- Ontrack Data Recovery™ today announced the availability of Ontrack® PowerControls™ 4.1 software, the newest version of its widely used mailbox recovery tool. This upgraded version helps Microsoft® Exchange administrators save time and deliver better recovery performance with powerful new content analysis functionality, message viewing capabilities, and expanded backup format support. With e-mail searching on the rise, the new options in PowerControls broaden its function to allow administrators more robust e-mail management possibilities.

“In today’s highly regulated environment, businesses have no shortage of reasons to search through their old e-mail,” said Jim Reinert, senior director of software and services for Ontrack Data Recovery. “Whether they need to produce old messages for regulatory compliance, archive legacy e-mail, or assist with a business project, companies typically have a lot of old mail to filter through, and most often that mail is stored in several different places. The content analysis capabilities in PowerControls 4.1 enable the user to perform complex operations on combinations of data sources rather than performing the operations one at a time. Administrators can use the content analysis tool to work offline from their production server, minimizing the time needed to filter specific messages.”

PowerControls, which earned “Verified for Microsoft Windows XP” status through independent testing, is used by IT professionals to quickly and easily search, copy, and restore message-level or individual mailbox items from any previous full backup, un-mounted databases (.edb) and Information Store files. Requiring no changes to the existing Exchange server or backup architecture, PowerControls slashes restore time, eliminates brick-level back-ups, minimizes the time it takes to locate all e-mails matching specific criteria using advanced searching capabilities, and eliminates the need for an Exchange recovery server. PowerControls 4.1 contains all of the features and benefits of the current product, plus additional new features including:

  • Content Analysis: PowerControls allows administrators to create any number of customized Content Analysis Stores (CAS), facilitating content, time period, and in-depth investigative analysis of their Exchange data. Each CAS is a “container” that can contain one or more data sources and one or more Profiles. CAS data sources can be an entire EDB file, a single EDB mailbox, or a single EDB folder, with CAS Profiles containing unique search criteria such as keywords, users, dates, and Boolean operators.

  • Arrange Messages by Conversation View: PowerControls now allows administrators to see a histogram of all replies and forwards of a given message. This is important for analyzing the conversation thread of a message.

  • Arrange Messages by Message Table View: This feature allows the administrator to see all folders that reference a single message. This is helpful for analyzing the Single Instance Storage (SIS) feature of Exchange server.

  • Arrange Messages by Attachment Table View: This allows the administrator to see all messages that reference a single attachment. This is also important for analyzing the Single Instance Storage (SIS) feature of Exchange server.

  • Enhanced Support for Backup Formats: PowerControls 4.1 now offers enhanced support for the newest versions of Symantec BackupExec™, Veritas NetBackup™ and Computer Associates® BrightStor™ ARCserve®. Support also is available for Microsoft® NT Backup, Legato NetWorker®, IBM® Tivoli®, CommVault® Galaxy™, UltraBac Software and HP OpenView Storage Data Protector backup formats.
