IBM to Offer New Technology to Integrate PHP into SOA

PRAGUE -- 15 June 2006 -- At the IBM SOA Executive Summit here, IBM announced today it will offer a PHP Integration Kit for WebSphere Application Server (WAS) Community Edition. This software will enable customers to use PHP technology to develop and execute applications in a service oriented architecture using IBM’s open source–based application server, WAS Community Edition.

PHP is an open-source scripting language for developing lightweight applications that complements Java-based technologies. The PHP Integration Kit for WAS Community Edition will enable users to leverage the advantages of both PHP and Java, providing greater flexibility in deploying dynamic applications, building web front-ends, and creating development projects within organizations. IBM will make the PHP Integration Kit available for download later this month on alphaWorks, IBM’s Web resource for emerging technologies.

The announcement continues IBM’s ongoing initiatives to embrace and encourage the use of industry-standard technology such as PHP to achieve business goals with technology in an SOA. IBM has previously offered technology that enables customers to develop and deploy PHP-based applications on selected IBM hardware.

"Businesses are quickly realizing the powerful combination of service oriented architecture environments and dynamic scripting languages like PHP,” said Jerry Cuomo, chief technology officer, IBM WebSphere Software. “With today’s announcement we’re continuing our progress in helping our customers and partners leverage the simplicity of PHP in building their applications, and we’ll be continuing to offer our customers new and innovative ways of incorporating PHP into their SOA infrastructure.”

IBM WebSphere Application Server Community Edition is a lightweight J2EE application server available free of charge. Built on Apache Geronimo technology, it harnesses the latest innovations from the open-source community to deliver a flexible foundation for developing and deploying Java applications. Technical support is offered through an annual subscription.

alphaWorks gives developers, innovators, and business decision makers the opportunity to evaluate and influence technology in the earliest phases of development.
