JBuilder 2007, Built on Eclipse, Accelerates Collaborative Development for Java, Open Source, and the Web
Enterprise-Class IDE integrates open source and commercial development
SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif., November 20, 2006 -- Today, CodeGear, formerly known as the Developer Tools Group of Borland Software Corporation, announced JBuilder® 2007, an enterprise-class integrated development environment (IDE) built on Eclipse to make collaborative development fast and reliable for Java(TM), open source and the web. CodeGear(TM) JBuilder 2007 accelerates developer velocity with Visual EJB(TM) and web services GUIs, provides balance between the worlds of open source and commercial software with TeamInsight(TM), an integrated collaboration portal, and increases developer confidence, through better control over open source plug-ins. Improving on its acclaimed Rapid Application Development (RAD) and team collaboration capabilities, JBuilder 2007 (formerly codenamed "Peloton") has been completely redesigned to leverage the Eclipse platform and help organizations be more successful and productive with open source.
Two major trends are driving change in software development today:
Providing "free" tools, components, and unlimited flexibility, open source by its nature creates an uncontrolled development environment that can make it difficult to manage an already-complicated process, ultimately increasing development costs, lowering productivity, and reducing confidence in the software used and developed. At the same time, macroeconomic changes have encouraged the increasing distribution of software development, creating challenges and increasing the cost of managing teams in remote locations.
JBuilder 2007 addresses these challenges with enterprise-class collaboration features that restore confidence in the software development process while leveraging an ecosystem of commercial and open source plug-ins, third-party tools, and frameworks. "For enterprise development, open source promises compelling cost benefits and flexibility, but realizing that potential without productivity loss, disorganization, and risk is difficult," explained Michael Swindell, vice president of products and strategy for CodeGear. "JBuilder 2007 will prove that enterprise development and open source are complementary, and can create unmistakable value for the overall organization."
Mike Milinkovich, executive director of the Eclipse Foundation, said, "JBuilder 2007 delivers enterprise-class capabilities that complement and extend the Eclipse platform, helping organizations and developers to better manage distributed teams and development. We are pleased that CodeGear has chosen Eclipse for building its next generation JBuilder IDE, which we expect to be a major new product in the Eclipse ecosystem."
Completely rebuilt and re-architected to take advantage of Eclipse, CodeGear's JBuilder 2007 combines the advantages of an open platform with JBuilder's trademark functionality, ease-of-use and productivity, including collaborative capabilities that help developers and organizations more effectively manage complex projects across teams and locations. Important benefits and features include:
Velocity: JBuilder 2007 increases the development velocity of Java teams and individuals with P2P, Visual EJB and web services GUIs and Java5 Enterprise functionality. JBuilder 2007 delivers an innovative and highly productive visual "drag and drop” environment with enterprise-class project management capabilities designed to increase speed and productivity.
Balance: JBuilder 2007 helps organizations manage and balance complex development projects across teams and locations, and across open source and proprietary software. JBuilder 2007's TeamInsight is an innovative collaboration foundation that lets organizations leverage best of breed solutions for source code management, requirements, bug tracking and project management. To manage the application lifecycle, JBuilder 2007 integrates with popular Borland Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) products including Together® and StarTeam®, also based on Eclipse.
Confidence: A trusted commercial solution, JBuilder 2007 establishes confidence in the software development process. JBuilder 2007 embraces and integrates the most popular open source plug-ins, tools and frameworks, all within a certified and managed turnkey development solution that organizations of any size can rely on.
JBuilder 2007 extends the value of Java and open-source resources for individual, small business, and enterprise developers worldwide. Developers already familiar with Eclipse will benefit from the broad support for various OSS and commercial application servers in JBuilder 2007, in addition to integrated performance tuning and management capabilities. Other unique features include LiveSource® Java visual source code modeling, Optimizeit(TM) Java Code Profiling, source code audits and metrics, refactoring and the complete TeamInsight agile open source development and deployment stack.
Today's release includes JBuilder 2007 Developer for individuals, JBuilder 2007 Professional for departmental users, and JBuilder 2007 Enterprise for enterprise teams.
