Olixir Technologies’ Hardware Compression and Encryption Increases Storage Capacity, Speeds Data Backup

SC-1000 hardware-accelerated compression and encryption option works without the performance and downtime penalty of software solutions

Milpitas, Calif., Feb. 1, 2007 -- Olixir Technologies today strengthened the advantage of replacing tape with disk-based solutions for data backup and offsite archiving with the announcement of the launch of the SC-1000 Hardware Accelerated Compression and Encryption option. Optimized for use with its FastRestore SE and FastRestore Enterprise systems, the SC100 provides powerful standards-based encryption, can quadruple the capacity of each disk drive, and boosts performance by 50 percent over software backup solutions.

The SC-1000, which is comprised of a hardware card that is easily installed into the PCI-X slot of a workstation or PC, compresses and encrypts data using two hardware-based engines that work in tandem to deliver significantly faster performance than is possible with software solutions that tie up system resources. The SC-1000 compression engine implements real-time data compression for disk-to-disk backup, while the security engine, which supports 128- and 256-bit key sizes, implements the AES algorithm in ECB mode with a 128-bit block size and variable key size changeable on a per-block basis. The solution is expected to meet various FIPS standards through upcoming testing.

Two models are being offered, one to be used with Symantec (formerly: Veritas) Backup Exec, and the other for use with a version of EMC-Insignia (Formerly: Dantz) Retrospect that is optimized to be used with the card.

The SC-1000 Hardware Accelerated Compression and Encryption Option is designed for use with Olixir's FastRestore SE and FastRestore Enterprise data backup and disaster recovery systems. Comprised of a hardware card that is installed into the PCI-X slot of a workstation or PC, the SC-1000 provides better performance than software-based solutions by integrating dual compression and security engines that work together to increase storage capacity, enable faster backups and provide industry-standard encryption.

While the SC-1000 provides a compression ratio typically from 2:1 to 4:1 with the majority of databases and e-mail files (actual compression varies based on file contents), increasing the effective capacity of the backup storage by a factor of two to four, it also delivers secure data encryption utilizing AES-128 or AES-256 encryption algorithms. The solution is expected to meet important FIPS standards in upcoming testing.

Utilizing hardware acceleration, the SC-1000 delivers compression throughput speeds as high as 75 MB/s and decompression speeds of up to 90 MB/s. Throughput speeds reach 85 MB/s in 128-bit and 65 MB/s in 256-bit when encrypting and decrypting stored data.

Two models with similar functionality are being offered, one (SC-1000) to be used with Symantec (formerly Veritas) Backup Exec, and the other (SC-1002) for use with a version of EMC-Insignia (formerly Dantz) Retrospect that is optimized to be used with the card.

Olixir's SC-1000 Hardware Accelerated Compression and Encryption Option is available now through Olixir's Webstore and soon through Olixir's channel partners such as Envoy Data, PC Mall, ProTel, and other resellers worldwide at a list price of $995.
