America's Second Harvest, the nation's largest domestic hunger relief organization, last year fed 21 million Americans seeking emergency food assistance. But with assistance from HP they help to meet the increasing need. According to the U.S. government, 35 million Americans are hungry or at risk of not knowing where their next meal is coming from.
In addition to providing domain expertise and supply-chain management and the next-generation Internet portal, HP has donated HP NetServer systems, PCs and printers to power and support ResourceLink www.resourcelink.org, an Internet-based e-service aimed at fighting hunger. ResourceLink pairs food suppliers with surplus food or products with certified charitable organizations that can use the goods for their relief or disaster-response programs. This Internet e-service is freely accessible to food manufacturers and suppliers and transportation companies, as well as to America's Second Harvest food banks and other charities. HP will also manage the Web site.
ResourceLink was officially launched in Chicago during the National Summit on Community Food Security, a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)-hosted conference of national, state and local leaders focused on reducing the number of hungry in the United States by 50 percent by 2015.
